OUR MATERIALS

SMARTER CHOICES

When designing the ED&COMPANY line we wanted to ensure we made smart material choices, to create products that stand the test of time and have the durability to stand up to the toughest wear and tear.

We were also conscious we wanted to limit our environmental impact. That's why we've used 100% recycled RPET fabrics on our bags and are GRS Recycled Certified. Plus, our clutches are made with 57% pre-consumer recycled leather, which means we're helping to reduce waste and support sustainable practices.

We believe that even the smallest details can make a difference, which is why we've incorporated recycled materials, like the zipper tape and the mesh in our pockets, into our designs. We're dedicated to creating products that are not only stylish, versatile and durable but also conscious of our impact on the planet.

We may not be perfect, but we're always looking to do better, and we hope you'll join us on this journey.

THE BREAKDOWN

What is RPET and how Is RPET Made?

RPET (Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate) is recycled plastic. It's the plastic used to make water bottles and PET packaging that would otherwise end up in the rubbish or the ocean. Through the following process it is recycled into fabric.

COLLECTION AND STERILISATION

Used PET water bottles are collected, sorted, and then thoroughly cleaned and sterilised to remove any contaminants, such as food or drink residue, labels, or other impurities.

CRUSHING AND DRYING

The sterilised bottles are then crushed into small, chip-sized pieces and dried to remove any remaining moisture. This process ensures that the resulting RPET is free from any impurities that could affect its quality or performance.

EXTRUSION

The dried PET chips are then melted down and extruded through a spinneret, which is a small device that creates long, thin strands of yarn. These yarns are then cooled and wound onto spools.

CRIMPING

The next step is to run the PET yarn through a crimping machine, which adds a fluffy texture to the yarn. This step is important because it creates more surface area, which helps the yarn to bond better with other fibres during the knitting or weaving process.

BALE, DYE, AND KNIT

Finally, the RPET yarn is baled, dyed to the desired colour, and then knitted or woven into fabric. This fabric is then used to create the nylon and polyester we use in our ED&CO bags.

What is Pre-consumer recycled leather?

Pre-consumer leather is the off-cuts or left over leather scraps from manufacturing, shaved into fine fibres and combined with water and a binding agent to create new, usable leather material.

Our bags may be made from the cutting room floor, but they're anything but scraps!
